OUR COMPANY

Enterra began in 2007 with the aim of solving two global problems: the need for finding new, sustainable sources of protein for animal feed and addressing the high prevalence of food waste.

Our solution to these problems came in the form of a beneficial, non-invasive insect species called the black soldier fly (BSF). We developed proprietary farming techniques to replicate the natural BSF lifecycle, using pre-consumer waste food to feed the larvae. This recycled food is collected from local farms, grocery stores and food production facilities and contains a mix of fruits, vegetables and grains.

Our BSF larvae grow rapidly under controlled conditions, efficiently converting the nutrients in the recycled food into protein and fat. The larvae are then dried and processed into three products:

  • EnterraGrubsTM – a feed supplement for poultry, wild birds and other insectivorous animals.
  • EnterraProteinTM– made from de-fatted larvae, it’s an excellent source of digestible protein and can be easily blended into commercial feed pellets for fish, poultry and pets.
  • EnterraOilTM – the fat component extracted from the larvae can also be blended into feed pellets or used as a pellet coating for enhanced flavouring.

We pioneered the approval of insects in animal feed in North America, being the first company to receive approval from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for use of EnterraGrubsTM  in feed for salmonids (salmon, trout, arctic char), tilapia and poultry. Enterra also led the first approvals in the US, with the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) adding Dried Black Soldier Fly Larvae to its ingredient list for salmonids. Additional applications are underway for further regulatory expansion.

We also sell an OMRI-listed organic fertilizer called EnterraFrassTM  which is made from the “frass” or manure of the black soldier fly larvae.  All our products are sustainably produced and are an ideal replacement for resource-intensive feed ingredients like fishmeal, soybean meal, coconut oil and palm kernel oil.
